"My brother was at this facility for 24 years. Initially run by Marriot it was first rate, lots of activities, excursions, and he was extremely happy. Emeritus took over and immediately doubled the rates and decreased the activities but my brother still enjoyed what was offered. Brookdale raised the rates as well but excursions seemed to be a thing of the past and only a small percentage of the activities remained. My brother became lethargic and spent most of his time napping in his room out of boredom. His big screen TV was replaced with a small one that he could only see looking through binoculars. His clothing, bed comforter, lamps, etc. simply disappeared but his room became the dumping ground for things other residents had left behind--hundreds of books (he didn't read), mismatched broken furniture, two huge trash bags of stuffed animals, pictures, and clothes and shoes, few of which were his size. I should have moved him but after 20 years it was "home" to him." - L.…

"Memory Care Unit - I have 8 years of experience managing my mother's dementia care in 3 different memory care. What I learned is this disease is difficult to manage, even in the best of situations. I've seen poor facilities and just ok facilities, but never great ones. So my expectations are low. But Tradition has scored a zero for their care of my mother in law. Three times in the past month we have called the facility and never got through to the staff on her floor. Terminal hold, phone systems down, etc. I asked the receptionist for the direct number to the memory care floor, but was told all calls have to go through the receptionist. Translation "We won't give you that number". My sister-in-law put a video camera in her mom's room so she knows when her mom has fallen and needs staff assistance. The 3 times she needed help, we could not get through to anyone to let them know." - Malena…

The figures below show the average monthly starting costs for assisted living of nearby cities. Keep in mind that these figures are an average, and that the numbers used to calculate it spanned a wide range. In fact, CareScout data suggests that most families will underestimate their monthly budget by almost 20%, meaning that once inclusions and services are factored in, they can actually afford more than they originally thought.
