"Overall the facility is relatively new and bright. Especially when compared to other facilities that I have visited. Staff is generally friendly and helpful. Activities are ok but there is a lot of time spent watching TV too which is probably true in most similar facilities. Rooms are nice and there are larger rooms that are spacious and companion suites as well, though they are obviously more expensive but among the largest I have seen, and I visited many. The bad: Food, not so good and at times inedible. Another reviewer mentioned the call button and I agree completely agree. Several times it took at least 45 minutes for a response and on one other occasion there was no response at all. If there had been a bona fide emergency I’m not sure that the outcome would not have been tragic. "Unfortunately my mom’s stay at this assisted living was only a few months long. There were too many issues with the medical /wellness managment which impacted the quality of care my mom received. I was extremely disappointed and surprised that there would be such a difference in the quality of care depending on which Bristal you chose. The peace of mind that comes from knowing we could trust this facility to take proper care of my mom just wasn’t there. I felt required to be there on a daily basis to ensure they were doing what was supposed to be done. Very stressful ! After many many discussions with the Wellness Managment asking them to do what was needed to meet my moms medical and daily care needs, none of which were particularly difficult or unusual, I had to accept the fact that they were just indifferent and unwilling care for my mom properly. "My mom recently moved in to Sunrise in East Meadow. The staff are warm and welcoming and I feel confident in their ability to provide a high level of care for my mom. While the actual process of moving was emotionally difficult for her, they had a variety of activities that kept her engaged and entertained in the early weeks so she adjusted pretty quickly given she had been in her previous house for almost 50 years. "This review is only for the reflections/memory care unit. My father was in the unit for a year and a half. The unit is under staffed and completely overwhelmed, and cannot handle many behaviors associated with dementia. He was sent to the ER almost 10 times in that year and a half because of agitation and yelling/aggression. The staff was not trained in how to handle this common symptom of dementia, even though we were told when we signed up that they could. They do not bring the residents outside of the unit for activities, again like they told us they would. So many of my father’s clothes and shoes went missing. Hundreds of dollars of items, gone. "Some personnel are kind and skilled but there is a lot of turn over and only a skeleton staff at night. Food is problematic- dishes are given gourmet names but not prepared well. Food is undercooked or overcooked and often unhealthy for elderly people with conditions like heart disease, diabetes or cancer. There is a sole healthy option of chicken but that’s it. Many meal items are from a can, processed and unhealthy. They push ice cream and cake. They sometimes ration popular dishes or run out. As a result meals are bread and butter back in the room. Another issue is the facility itself. It’s beautifully decorated but not with seniors in mind. Abstract repetitive art-confuses residents.Seats are too low or deep and there isn’t a space other than the cold, crowded lobby for monthly music nights. Fire dept calls & water shut offs. The head nurse sets a truly negative tone for the company as she has no bedside manner and thinks she's more important than she actually is. The woman refuses to share medical records even when our family involved the state. The place is short staffed and the memory care unit is basically a "locked facility!"
