"Our family’s experience with Brookdale Oak Park Senior Living was extremely concerning. After meeting with the Sales Manager and arranging a nurse assessment for my father, I expected a clear and professional follow-up. Instead, when I reached out for an update, I was contacted by the Assistant Director, who spoke to me in a dismissive and aggressive way. I was told only that my father would be “better suited” for another facility. When I asked politely for clarification, she refused to provide any explanation, spoke to me disrespectfully, and ultimately hung up on me. This type of treatment is unacceptable from any senior living provider, let alone someone in leadership. Families making decisions about care deserve transparency, honesty, and compassion. As an African American family, I also cannot help but question whether bias contributed to how abruptly and disrespectfully we were treated. "The Breakers is an affordable option for Independent living, with some inconveniences you should consider up-front. The building was built in 1988 and show signs of deferred maintenance and poor upkeep. This partially explains the low cost. And one day the building will need to be completely refurbished or sold, so be aware when the signs emerge that this is in the offing. The 4 elevators cannot adequately handle the resident population when one or more elevator will be shut down due to a move in, medical emergency, or frustrated staff holding the doors open with a chair on a floor to keep it for themselves. This can result in wait times over 30 minutes and makes planning for doctor's visits problematic as you never know how much time to allow. And the elevator size can't handle all the modern mobility assistance devices that many residents use now. Some staff are wonderful but most are burned out. "In May it will be a year since our son Blaise found a home at the Summit of Uptown Park Ridge. What a blessing it was, that a room was available for him in the assistant’s living building at that time. Blaise has gone through many ups and downs since he moved in, but he is truly happy in his one-bedroom apartment. The nursing staff under the Care Director, Marinela B is outstanding. Up until this past Friday, Blaise liked to travel out of town, and it always entailed a lot of extra planning. All his Meds needed to be prepared, and he needed extra help and guidance in the preparations for his trips. The nursing staff has always been very efficient and helpful. But most of all is the help we get from Marinela. She has been such a comfort to us. No matter what time I walk into her office with another Blaise wish, she finds time for me and a solution. "I was very scared to move my mom into a supportive living facility, the director of this facility had my back every step of the way from start to finish and made the process seem-less, this was not an easy decision as most know if they care for a LO, my mom is happy here, the head nurse answers my texts no matter the time of day, the doctor that sees the residents noticed my mom had a UTI and had her on antibiotics right away, my mom has gained 26 lbs since moving in to her apt, her heart doctor was impressed at how well she was doing in such a short amount of time, the dining area could use some improvements as far as I noticed some heaters broken and ceiling issues, but that has no effect on the great food they serve, my mom LOVES IT! "The facility is clean and nicely appointed, but not well-run or a good value for the money. In the short time our mom was there (almost two years), they have had three executive directors. With the exception of Allie at the front desk, Westbrook is not a caring supportive community. Our loved one was in independent living, but the director did not tolerate us advocating for our parent who was starting to need additional support. No care or concern shown. They are corporately owned and are concerned with their image rather than residents. They operate with minimal overworked staff, and offer minimal services while raising rates. "Not the best. Always a high turnover in staff. My Mom and other patients wait forever to order their food and then even longer to get it and get the correct order. The staff pretends to be friendly but beneath that phony exterior they just want to get the heck out of there as soon as possible. It's just a job to them.
