Mill Pond

1201 Southeast Mill Pond Court, Ankeny, IA, 50021
Assisted Living, Memory Care, Independent Living, Nursing Home, Continuing Care Retirement Community

"We chose Mill Pond’s memory care unit for our mother, trusting their promise of individualized support as her dementia progressed. Unfortunately, when her needs increased, they admitted they weren’t willing or able to meet them and asked us to move her out. This forced our family to find and fund a new facility, which as you know is an exhausting and costly process. This turmoil for our dear mother could have been avoided with transparency from the start. Their marketing and conversations suggest they can handle advancing dementia, but our experience shows otherwise. Families deserve honesty when making these difficult choices. If you’re considering Mill Pond, ask direct questions and don’t assume they’re prepared for long-term dementia care. We certainly wish we had." - Janine…

Heritage House

1200 Brookridge Circle, Atlantic, IA, 50022
Assisted Living, Memory Care, Independent Living, Nursing Home, Continuing Care Retirement Community

History In 1946, the South Iowa Methodist Church Conference had a vision of providing a retirement home for aging ministers. Using the gift of the Chamberlain Estate in Des Moines, the Conference established Wesley Acres Inc. as a faith-inspired, nonprofit ministry to serve older adults. Located in the heart of the city, the Chamberlain Estate included beautiful wooded acreage and contained the grand Chamberlain mansion, which was designed by noted architect William George Rantoul. The first residents inhabited the Chamberlain house, and donated their time and talents to support the operation of the household. From Wesley Acres' original five residents, WesleyLife has grown to serve more than 8,000 older adults in seven Communities for Healthy Living and through an array of home-based services and three adult day centers in 15 Iowa counties. 1960s Halcyon House, located in Washington, Iowa, was added to the family in 1960. It included a nursing wing and 20 independent apartments. Construction was financed by the first FHA loan made in Iowa. Heritage House, situated in the heart of Atlantic, Iowa, was built and welcomed its first residents in 1962. Wesley Acres Inc. was renamed the South Iowa Methodist Homes Inc. in 1963. 1980s In 1987, a corporate reorganization changed South Iowa Methodist Homes Inc. to Wesley Retirement Services. Wesley-Methodist Adult Day Care was established on the Wesley Acres campus as a joint venture of Wesley and Iowa Methodist Medical Center in 1988. 1990s The Village in Indianola was built in 1991, and Park Centre in Newton opened a year later, with Willowbrook Adult Day relocating to the Park Centre campus. 2000s In 2001, Wesley Retirement Services corporate offices moved from the Chamberlain Mansion its present offices in Johnston, Iowa. In 2004, recognizing the need to assist older adults in their home, Wesley at Home, a certified-Medicare in-home health care agency, was launched in Des Moines, Iowa, to serve Polk, Warren and Dallas counties. Two years later in 2006, Wesley at Home opened in Ames to serve Story, Hamilton and Boone counties. That summer, Wesley merged with Generations Inc., a 60-year old senior services organization, expanding Wesley's mission by bringing Meals on Wheels and a variety of personal care services to lower-income older adults. The new home and community-based services division is called Wesley Community Services. Wesley extended its mission by offering hospice in the Greater Des Moines, Indianola and Ames areas in 2007. In 2008, Wesley at Home expands to serve older persons in southwest Iowa in the counties of Cass, Guthrie and Audubon counties in West Central Iowa. A local private-duty company, Kindred Connection, joined the Wesley family to support nonmedical home needs. In 2009, Wesley Retirement Services announced plans to change its name to WesleyLife—a more encompassing name reflecting a growing focus on providing support and services for people, wherever they call home. Edgewater of West Des Moines opened in doors in 2009. 2010s Pella Regional Health Center transferred ownership of Fair Haven East, Pella Manor and Jefferson Place to WesleyLife effective Jan. 1, 2010. These three communities are known as Hearthstone, a ministry of WesleyLife. In 2013, WesleyLife introduced a new transportation service, Wesley Wheels, offering “door through door” service in Greater Des Moines. In 2014, Hearthstone opened The Cottages, a community dedicated to transforming the experience of assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing. The Cottages were recognized in 2015 as a top Award of Merit recipient in the 19th annual national Environments for Aging Design Showcase. All nine WesleyLife locations – all seven communities, the 18th Street offices and the Home Office – earned recognition as Blue Zones Designated Worksites in 2015. "My mother was a resident of the Good Neighbor Nursing Home for about 16 months. At first, I worried about Mom being there because it was unfamiliar to me. However, in the months that followed her first weeks there, I found the staff to be exemplary. Everyone that came in her room were kind and caring. They respected her and her opinions (she was of sound mind and reminded us of that from time to time, LOL). They would come in just to visit with her for a few minutes. They notified us immediately if she was not well and treated her medicinally as needed. If I had to do it again, knowing what I know of them now, I would not hesitate to move her there." - Carol…

& Sunlight Memory Care Centers Medical and memory care needs of Sunrise residents have changed since we introduced the Bernstein and Sunlight Centers 25 years ago. To serve faithfully into the future, we must change, too. We owe residents more. Bernstein and Sunlight have aging and inefficient ventilation systems, small resident rooms, and inadequate restrooms that lack privacy. While other components of the Sunrise continuum set the standard for senior care, these facilities are no longer “best in class” in the field. We can’t delay. Connecting memory care residents with the beautiful chapel, indoor park, and other amenities in the now-new Sunrise Health Center will enrich their experiences and ensure an edge in a competitive senior market. There is no better way to round out our services to seniors, but the longer we wait, the older our other facilities become. We have to do better. Especially when there are wheelchairs involved, small bathrooms provide tight quarters for caregivers to assist residents—and that’s far from ideal. By creating more spacious restrooms, we’ll provide for the safety of our staff and the dignity of our elders. We’ll also secure the very latest in ADA compliance. We must dream bigger. Since 1959, we’ve welcomed more than 6,000 residents to the Sunrise campus. This new and exciting trajectory allows us to serve seniors with chronic confusion alongside those with different medical conditions. This means couples could stay together when one of them is memory impaired and the other is not. Will you help us? Your gift will support far more than construction costs. It will secure our future…and your future, too…as we embrace life’s changes and invest in what really matters. Call 712.276.3821, Ext: 0 for Hallie Salmen, executive director, or Lorrie Stedman, director of fund development Pledge Form Brochure Sunrise is Siouxland’s only community based, not-for-profit retirement governed by a local volunteer board of directors.
