"The public facilities are constantly updated and fresh flowers are in the lobby, but beneath the glitz are serious issues with the care provided. Belmont does not provide sufficient training of staff to provide the higher care levels required as Residents' cognitive and physical skills decline due to age. Residents with higher nursing requirements are not assigned better trained caregivers. Staff are assigned as available, and high turnover and lack of training causes safety issues. "For nearly 3 years, 3 of my relatives have been residents at Oakmont of Torrance. In that time, -turnover has been off the charts, including about 5 executive directors, about 5 health care directors, and several activity directors; -foodservice has been terrible, with residents often waiting an hour or more for food; -response to emergency call buttons worn by residents has often taken 30-45 minutes; and -residents have been locked out in the evening, with nobody answering phones to unlock the door. Steps have been taken to address some issues, such as giving residents a code to open the front door at night. And under the community's latest Executive Director, service levels seem to be improving. We are cautiously optimistic, but there still is a long way to go. Meanwhile, prices continue to increase, and most recently, Oakmont decided to begin charging residents for parking.
