"I've lived at ALMAV, San Rafael for the past three years and have been extremely pleased with this home away from home. The administrative staff with its supportive group of assistants, leaves very little to be desired. Maintenance, activities, health care, spiritual and culinary perform far more than expected. "I have been a resident at Drake Terrace for several years now and I love living here. The management team is wonderful to work with and they all seem to have been here for a long time, which says a lot in this industry. We have made many new friends and feel very much a part of this community because of the fantastic activities director who works so hard to give us something fun to look forward to every day. "I have a family member who lives at the Bluffs. They have very high employee turnover and are often inadequately staffed. It is not a safe place. This results in wait times of over an hour when emergency call buttons are pressed. Multiple times, my family member has waited over an hour for help to come. If there is a large-scale emergency, residents will be in serious danger. "Looked into a couple assisted/memory care facilities close to where I live. Had taken my father out of a large facility to live with me and my wife for the last 2 years. He's 98 and needed to transition into a facility that could care better for him. He has trouble with hearing, eyesight and dementia. The newest and largest was very dissapointing , little attention and meals were not appealing or sufficient. I would never want to be there. Big $ to get in, little attention. Bel Marin Gardens was a lucky find, got last spot only 6 max residents. Most of the residents have limited mobility. I am pleased when I see all attention and love and patience given to all the residence there. The place is super clean, beautiful rooms with doors to deck, next to nice small park. Wonderful sunny neighborhood. The cooking goes on all day. Very professionally run. Very reasonable considering it includes all services. "Comforting Hands? More like Greedy Hands and I would not recommend them. The staff seem nice but they are being done no favors under the current management. Our experience: my 95-year-old friend was referred by a Kaiser social worker to stay at “Comforting Hands” for two weeks upon his hospital release. With a 30% cut for the social worker, my friend was charged $4,500 for two weeks! (read: you should absolutely negotiate the price for a loved one in the same situation). The administrator made my friend’s stay very uncomfortable because she was constantly fretting about getting paid. When I learned of this, I went there to help get things sorted. I gave her a check for $1,000 from my friend. She agreed to accepting another post-dated check for the remainder until my friend could get his funds sorted as soon as he was home again. However, she did not honor the agreement. Most unscrupulously, she changed the date on the check without consent (!) and cashed it 14 days early — causing my friend all sorts of problems. "My husband recently died of Parkinson’s disease. For the last 5 years he lived at a board and care home. His home, originally called L’Chaim House and now under new management and named Gentle Home Care at 463 Nova Albion Way, was such a remarkable find. My husband couldn’t have had better care and because he had frequent falls the staff watched him like a hawk to keep him safe. They always made great food and the house was always spotless …his bedding and clothes were always clean. I can’t recommend this board and care enough. It is a difficult decision to place a loved one in such a home but they gave my husband the best care possible.
