Brookdale Carmel receives mixed reviews from residents and their families. Many praise the facility for its compassionate care, knowledgeable staff, and engaging activities tailored to residents with dementia and Alzheimer's. Several reviewers highlight the staff's dedication, noting their efforts to involve residents in activities and maintain a clean, welcoming environment. Positive experiences often mention the facility's ability to improve residents' well-being and the supportive communication with families. However, there are significant concerns about recent staff changes, understaffing, and inadequate training, leading to a decline in care quality. Some reviewers report medication errors, poor communication, and a lack of supervision, particularly during weekends and night shifts. Complaints also include issues with billing, overcharging, and a lack of transparency regarding medical decisions. A few reviews mention safety concerns, such as falls and inadequate interventions, and dissatisfaction with the facility's response to these incidents. Overall, while Brookdale Carmel is praised for its specialized dementia care and community atmosphere, recent operational challenges and staffing issues have led to negative experiences for some families. While there are a few compassionate staff members at Brookdale, the overall quality of care is unsatisfactory. There are too many caregivers and nurses who need more training and supervision. When a family member asks a question or challenges the staff member, in too many cases the staff member is defensive and sometimes rude. While my loved one was there, there was a high turnover of staff. The corporate office came in and pushed out some caring staff members and replaced them with some of the rudest people I have ever had to deal with. I had to move my loved one to a different place for his own safety and well-being.

If you are looking for compassionate, skilled care for your loved one with dementia, Brookdale Carmel is not the place. There are much better facilities out there. It's difficult to know how to choose, because they all say the right things & promise the moon. It's only when you actually get there & spend a lot of time observing, that you realize they fall short. For- profit memory cares often do not pay the lower level staff enough to attract quality employees & they are often poorly supervised. Don't be taken in by the slick marketing or positive reviews written by relatives who may not always know what's going on.
