About The Chesapeake

The Chesapeake is an Assisted Living community in the Newport News area that also offers Memory Care, Independent Living, Nursing Home, and Continuing Care Retirement Community care.

Life at The Chesapeake is about empowering you to chart your own course for retirement. The maintenance-free lifestyle at The Chesapeake gives you more time and more freedom, so whatever it is you love to do, you can do it. Remain active in all the community organizations you enjoy, dive deeper into a lifelong hobby, explore a new interest, learn something new, or take advantage of The Chesapeake’s full calendar of activities, trips and social events.More than 75 years ago, Reverend J. T. Edwards of Culpeper, VA, dreamed of establishing a residential community to care for older adults. His dream was realized in 1945, when the Baptist General Association of Virginia voted to open a community in Culpeper. Thus began Lifespire of Virginia, an organization whose name has become synonymous with exceptional retirement living.

Today, the early vision of Dr. Edwards lives on in Lifespire of Virginia’s four communities: Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community, Lakewood Manor in Richmond, The Glebe in Daleville, and The Chesapeake in Newport News.

The Chesapeake opened its doors in 1969 and quickly became recognized as a premier senior community on the Virginia peninsula. The Community transitioned to a continuing care retirement community in the late 1990s and totally redesigned its campus with the addition of new resident buildings, cottages, and an impressive community center. Construction was completed in 2004 and today the Community continues to provide a warm and welcoming environment on its 40 acre campus, complete with beautiful trees and flowering vegetation. Additional renovations are currently in progress throughout the campus to further enhance the beauty and amenities of The Chesapeake. With Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support, and Skilled Nursing Care all under one roof, our design is quite popular with residents and family members . At the heart of our mission is our commitment to Dignity in Living™, which reflects the ideals of faith and family in our communities. Our warm, friendly community welcomes people of all faiths, beliefs and traditions

The Chesapeake is a retirement community offering independent living with various amenities, including therapy rooms, a beauty shop, a library, a fitness room, and a swimming pool. The facility is described as clean, modern, and high-end, with friendly staff and a good atmosphere. However, it is noted to be costly, with a significant buy-in fee and monthly charges. Some reviews highlight issues with management, citing unprofessionalism and poor communication. Concerns are raised about the facility's ability to handle residents with cognitive decline or mental health issues, with some families experiencing difficulties when transitioning loved ones to assisted living or memory care. The facility's policy requires residents to be physically fit upon entry, and some reviews mention inadequate assistance in areas beyond independent living. While some residents and visitors appreciate the decor and environment, others report negative experiences, particularly in healthcare and rehabilitation services. Complaints include unresponsive staff, poor food quality, and a lack of personalized care. Despite its appealing appearance and amenities, The Chesapeake receives mixed reviews, with some praising its offerings and others criticizing its management and care services.
