About Marvella

Marvella is an Assisted Living community in the St Paul area that also offers Memory Care and Independent Living care. Estimated costs for this community start at $4,100/mo, which includes certain standard amenities and services but the final cost may vary according to care needs and accommodation type.

When considering your next home, remember that life should be more than comfortable … it should be “Marvella” (marvelous, extraordinary, wonderful to ponder)! In fact, Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) named its newest senior living community, nestled on the bluffs of the Mississippi River at Highland Bridge in St. Paul’s Highland Park neighborhood, Marvella … and for good reason. Marvella offers seniors a variety of lifestyle options—independent living, assisted living and memory care—allowing residents to stay within their neighborhood of choice while co-mingling with diverse generations from the greater community. The setting is amenity rich, and residents are just steps away from restaurants, grocery stores and greenspace.

With architecture of stone, brick and stucco, Marvella reflects the historic character of St. Paul while conveying its strength and permanence. Seniors will find thoughtfully designed apartments, engaging amenities and signature programming embedded within this dynamic urban setting.

CareScout Community Score

Based on CareScout’s proprietary scoring.

The CareScout Community Score is calculated using our proprietary rating system, created to help families make well-informed choices about senior living options. This score is determined using a comprehensive set of criteria, including sentiment analysis of online ratings and reviews, user-submitted feedback on CareScout.com, completeness of the community profile, input from employees and local advisors, a community's contracted status with CareScout, and the frequency of visits to the community's website and location. Communities can earn a maximum score of 10.

What families are saying

We’ve gathered and summarized real family reviews from across the internet for you. Contact a CareScout representative for details.

The reviews for Marvella, a retirement community, present a mixed picture. Many reviewers praise the facility for its modern, sleek design and convenient location near Highland Park shops. The amenities, including a dining facility, bistro, gym, theater, swimming pool, and spa, are highlighted as attractive features. Positive feedback often mentions the friendly and accommodating staff, with specific praise for individuals like Nicole Stenstrom, Melissa Lawrence, Julie Olson, and Connor Jensen. Residents and their families appreciate the variety of activities available, such as pickleball, basketball, and table tennis, and commend the quality of the food and dining experiences. However, there are significant concerns raised, particularly regarding the care of residents in memory care and hospice. Some reviewers report neglect, inadequate pain management, and poor communication from staff. There are allegations of residents being asked to leave when their care needs increase, particularly if they become unable to walk or require hospice care. Complaints about the high cost of living, mismanagement, and insufficient supervision in memory care are also noted. Some reviewers express dissatisfaction with the handling of medications and the quality of food, describing small portions and rude staff. Overall, while Marvella is praised for its aesthetics and amenities, there are serious concerns about the quality of care for residents with higher needs, suggesting a disparity between the facility's outward appearance and the experiences of some residents and their families.

My mom had lived in Marvella’s Memory Care for 15 mo when they forced her to leave because she needed a wheelchair. While moving my mom's belongings out of her room, I discovered an enormous rodent infestation. There was solid sheet of droppings under the cushions of her couch. Much of the interior fabric was eaten away. There were droppings inside my mom's bed frame and along her headboard. The infestation created a serious health risk to my mom as well as other residents. Hantavirus is contracted by breathing air contaminated with rodent feces. It can be fatal. After my mom left, Marvella informed me they kept her damage deposit because there was damage to her carpet. There was a blood stain where my mom fell and hit her head. Marvella’s policy must be that Memory Care residents are required to clean up their own biohazardous fluids. When I realized the staff was never going to clean it up, I scrubbed it, but it did leave a stain, so my mom was penalized. Shame on you, Marvella.
