Baking a Difference: Rose and Dorisa — Video
“When I first started working with Rose, the first thing she asked me was: do you cook?”
Dorisa, Rose’s professional caregiver, laughs heartily as she recalls the memory. Rose, sitting next to her, raises her eyebrows into an innocent expression that says: Yep, that sounds like something I would say.
To be fair, food has always been an important part of Rose’s life. Some of her fondest memories include cooking and baking for her kids and grandkids. (Heck, she was even in a commercial for the supermarket she used to work at.)
Rose doesn’t have the same energy level she used to have, but that hasn’t slowed down her baking output. Dorisa frequently helps her bake some of her favorite treats from her old recipe book. Today, at Rose’s home in Texas, the two of them are baking a tried-and-true classic: the chocolate chip cookie.
They rustle about in the kitchen, cracking eggs and stirring batter, until the cookies are ready for the oven. As Dorisa sets the timer, Rose reflects on their companionship.
“Once you get older and need someone with you,” she says, grabbing Dorisa’s hand, “it’s wonderful if you can get along with them.”
Ten minutes later, the timer dings. Dorisa sets the table with a plate of fresh, gooey cookies. The house smells heavenly.
